Metal quality is a key element for making quality castings. As aluminum (and even more so magnesium) very quickly forms an oxide layer on the surface which does not dissolve any more and is easily folded into the metal when the metal is transferred in a turbulent way, it is very important to have any metal transfer as quiescent as possible. While we can do this with pumps and launder systems and also filter and clean the metal before, there is always this last transfer into the shot sleeve, which is extremely critical. Typically done with ladles (many types, hand and automatic), it can also be done with dosing pumps or with vacuum dosing. In any case we have to deal with a metal cascade into the shot sleeve which can cause oxide films and attack of the shot sleeve where the hot metal hits it. We also have to deal with skin buildup (on the ladle or the transfer launder). Alternatives have been developed that fill the shot sleeve from the bottom, which mean the metal is either sucked into the shot sleeve by vacuum or pumped from the bottom. In this webinar all common and new technologies from around the globe for metal transfer into the shot sleeve will be presented and discussed.
