The material presented in this video are some highlights from NADCA’s online webinar – Heat Treating of Aluminum Die Castings. Historically die castings have been used in the as-cast condition, as exposing the castings to the elevated temperatures associated with heat treatment can cause surface blistering. This can place die castings at a disadvantage compared to components produced by other casting processes. However, there has been a lot of interest recently in the heat treatment of die castings & recent processes will be summarized. This course will review the metallurgy associated with the heat treatment of aluminum alloys. Processes & mechanical properties for aluminum die castings heat treated to various conditions will then be reviewed, including: (1) Full T6 heat treatment of conventional die castings; (2) T5 heat treatment of conventional die castings (3) Heat treatment of low-iron conventional die castings: (4) Heat treatment of die castings produced by the high vacuum die casting process; (5) Heat treatment of castings produced by high integrity processes such as squeeze & semi-solid casting.
